May News

Dear Milford Family,

The last month of school is upon us, and it will probably be the hardest month for me personally.  For those of you that may not already know, I will be retiring at the end of June.  After 37 years in education, I have decided to join my husband in retirement, and dabble in some hobbies I’ve put on the shelf for a long time.   This was a difficult decision for me, since I thoroughly love my job, and most of all the children.  I want to take this opportunity to thank you for allowing me to serve as your child’s principal these past six years.  I can’t think of a better place to end my retirement than here at Milford.

With CRCT Assessments behind us, we thank you for supporting us by making sure your child was at school everyday on time.  Thanks boys and girls for all of your hard work! ( Milford Staff)  We will let everyone know of the results as soon as they come in.

Our students are looking forward to completing their school assignments and taking part in some of the exciting activities that the teachers have planned for them these last few weeks.  Check out our Milford Calendar!  We hope that many of you will be able to attend some of these events.

As the school year comes to a close, below are a few reminders that you may need to take care of before the last day of school:

·         Register your child for Kindergarten.

·         Notify our office if you know that you’re moving.  Please share any information you have, so that your child’s records can be prepared and sent to the new school, when the receiving school requests them.

·         Stop by the nurse’s office to pickup any leftover medications, if meds were stored for your child.

·         Return library books and/or other school property, and pay any charges for lunch, library books, and/or ASP.

Supply Lists for the new school year will be in your child’s mailed report card.  Summer office hours to pick up report cards that were not mailed are between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.  Besides our May events, you may want to add these dates to your July/August calendar:

                                Tuesday, July 21,

                                        New Student Registration

                                        from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

                                Sneak-a-Peek TBA

Monday, August 10,  First Day of School

Take care,

Denise S. Feezor

Boys and Girls,

Don’t forget to keep reading and writing over the summer.  Maybe you can write to Mrs. Feezor and tell me how you’re doing over the summer.  Ms. Kym can send me all your letters, and I will answer them.  I will miss you!  Wishing you a safe and enjoyable summer!!

Love and hugs,

Mrs. Feezor

March and April News

Download March newsletter

Dear Milford Family,

Spring is just around the corner, and so is testing.  Our teachers have planted those seeds of learning, and the students have been engaged in the Performance Standards, and are now ready to show off the fruits of their labor.  I know you will support our teachers in ensuring that your child is ready to do their best on the Georgia Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) beginning this April 21st through May 1st. (Please see Dr. Kuykendall's CRCT information by downloading the attached document.)

Be assured, we will make every effort to assist your child in obtaining grade level status in reading and math. However, if this does not occur, your 3rd or 5th grade student will be able to receive additional instruction on June 2-June 23, at a soon to be announced Summer School. On June 24th, the CRCT in reading will be administered to 3rd and 5th graders. On June 25th, the CRCT in math will be administered to 5th graders only. July 7th will be a make-up day for reading, and July 8th will be a make-up day for math if your child misses either or both tests on the scheduled June testing days.  You should have already received a pre-registration letter and form for summer school during conference week, if recent assessment results showed that your 3rd or 5th grader may be at risk for not passing the reading and/or math portion of the CRCT in April.

Soon our Placement Committee will begin preparing for the 2009-10 school year.  Teachers, counselors, and administrators consider the needs of each student and recommend a tentative class placement.  It is our desire to provide the best possible learning environment for your child. If there is information about your child of which we are not aware, you may submit that information in writing to Dr. Kuykendall, Assistant Principal, by April 30th. Requests for specific teachers or classmates cannot be honored. You only need to tell us of your child's strengths, weaknesses, and optimal learning environment. Time constraints prevent us from scheduling individual conferences about class placement. Letters are optional, not required.

We are looking foward to having parents participate in a number of activities planned over the remaining months of school, i.e., Cosmic Bowling, Cultural Arts Day, 5th Grade Dance, Field Days, etc. Please call the school office and speak with our secretary, Kym Taylor, if you would like to help out with any of these events. In an effort to conserve paper, we are only sending out a one page bi-monthly newsletter. However, please view your child's teacher's blog for additional information.

Enjoy Spring Break!!

Sincerely,

Denise S. Feezor

January News

A Note from the Principal….

Dear Milford Family,

Happy New Year!  I hope everyone has had a restful and enjoyable holiday season!  It’s hard to believe we have begun our second semester of school, and Conference Week is just around the corner.  Our teachers are looking forward to sharing with you the progress our students have made during the week of January 26-30.

Besides enjoying the fun activities planned for students and parents these next few months, we are hoping that our families of 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades will be able to join us for our Intermediate Curriculum Night on Feb. 24.  We have added 17 more interactive boards to our classrooms this year.  Since 90% of our classrooms are equipped with 21st Century technology, our teachers will highlight flipcharts they use in the classroom to address the state curriculum standards, students will have an opportunity to show you how they interact with the board activities, and you can take part in our favorite game “Are you smarter than a Milford student?”  By the way, we will begin the evening with a 30-minute informational session about the upcoming State CRCT’s.  A reminder note will be sent home prior to this special event.

Our teachers strive to make learning fun for our students, and the students in turn work hard to meet their goals in reading, writing, and math.  Once again, we ask for your continued support in making sure your student/s are at school on time (before 7:50 a.m.),

so that their school day will start out smoothly.

Reminder--February 14th is Valentine’s Day!  Why not drop a Valentine card or note to your child in our front lobby mailbox!

See you soon!

Sincerely,

Denise S. Feezor

Nov./Dec. News

Dear Milford Family,

Can you believe we are beginning our holiday season already?  Lots of learning by students, and family fun activities has been taking place over the past 12 weeks of school.  We certainly hope you’ve had an opportunity to participate in some of these events, and will continue to do so in the months ahead.

Our teachers are working diligently to ensure that your students are meeting state standards in all of the content areas.  As you walk the hallways of our school and visit in classrooms, you will see posted the official standards and essential questions that reflect the curriculum that is being taught at that grade level.

We hope you are participating in the weekly phone calls home by your child’s teacher, engaging your student each day in the agenda activity for the week.  Please make it a point to inform your child’s teacher and the office of any changes in telephone numbers, so that we may continue our efforts to keep communication open at all times.

Be on the lookout for an invitation to our annual VIP Thanksgiving Luncheon!  We’ve set aside two days for our Very Important Person/s to come and eat lunch with their favorite youngster/s.  We are anticipating a large turnout, so we have designated one day for 1st, 2nd and 4th grades, and one day for Pre-K, Kdg., 3rd, and 5th grades.  This year we will offer an optional family picture by Lifetouch during this special lunch.

We hope that our families will attend our PTA mtg. and Holiday Program on December 2nd, and offer support to our teachers as they prepare for their annual winter classroom party.  Parent engagement is an essential part of student success in school.  Your presence as a school volunteer in and outside of the classroom is a very important ingredient of school culture.

During this holiday season, it is my hope that the economics of our country do not interfere with what should take priority in our lives, and that is our children.  As we gather around family and friends this holiday season let us reflect on only the good memories, and the anticipation of more to come.  On behalf of our entire staff, I wish you a beautiful and inspiring holiday season!

Sincerely,

Denise Feezor

Sept./Oct. News

Dear Milford Families,

Were looking forward to a great school year! Using the 2008 Olympics as a springboard for discussion, during grade level assemblies, our boys and girls were made aware of the opportunities they have to achieve their goals. "Working Together for Student Success"is our revised mission statement.

Our Sneak-a-Peek Fun Day had over 600 participants. Once again, we appreciate members of Milford Baptist Churchs congregation, and Lifes Hope Baptist Church for providing the cookout for our families, and the moonwalk for our students. I know the children were excited to meet their new teachers on this special day.

Please mark your calendar for our Open House on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 6:30. We will begin the evening with a brief SPLOST presentation, PTA update, and visits to classrooms. Our teachers are looking forward to covering the nuts and bolts of classroom activities, schedules, homework, rules, etc. with you. Lets show our support for home and school by attending this important event. (Dont forget to bring along $4.00 for your PTA membership dues.) We want our PTA to support our students, and that means we need YOU!

We also hope you will mark your calender for Tuesday, October 28th, when we have our Curriculum Night activities for our primary students, Kdg., 1st, and 2nd grades. We will also have our Book Fair open that evening for you to have the opportunity to buy a book or two for your child. See you soon!

Sincerely,

Denise S. Feezor

August 2008 ~ Welcome Back to School!

Dear Milford Family,

Welcome back to school!  We hope you’ve had a great summer, and are looking forward to a new school year, as much as our teachers and staff.

As you know by now, Milford did not make AYP this year.  But, we are not in Needs Improvement.  Milford met the AYP criteria for Test Participation, as well as the AYP criteria in Attendance Rate.  Our total AYP population made the necessary trajectory gains in CRCT Reading/English Lang. Arts (State requirement:  73.3%; Milford: 82.3%), and CRCT Math (State requirement:  59.5%; Milford: 64.2%); however, we need to continue to work with our limited English Language students.  Our teachers worked very hard this past year to set high expectations for our students and will continue to do so this school year.

The new State CRCT Math test contained many problem-solving questions that required our students to do a good deal of reading.  Our teachers have already taken steps during pre-planning to plan new math strategies and activities to address the needs of our students.  They will be giving benchmark math tests to our students twice each nine-week grading period during the year to measure student gains and improve instruction.

Our goals will continue to focus on student achievement in the areas of reading, math, and writing across the curriculum, as well as technology integration.  Two thirds of our classrooms are equipped with inter-active boards that provide hands-on participation by students.

Milford’s school-wide goal continues to be parent involvement.  It was wonderful to see so many of our parents support their child’s teacher’s weekly telephone calls to the home, and become engaged in the agenda activity of the week this past spring.  We will continue this activity throughout the school year.

Parent participation in activities during the day and evening has increased, as well as volunteer help during the school day.   However, we are still in need of PTA officers to support student dances, skating, fundraising activities, carnivals, etc. that are so important for the children and school community.  Please give our school a call, if you would like to take part in ensuring these fun events can continue to take place for our students—(678) 842-6966.  We need YOU!!

We will continue to emphasize our “high expectations” for children, “time on task,” and a “safe and secure environment” for all.

Sincerely,

Denise S. Feezor
