Roving Report 5/6/09 - Christian

Roving Reporter-Christian

May 6, 2009

Today when I got to class, I saw an odd looking paper on my desk and it said I have to do a report about my day in school. I did Morning Work and DOL and then Miss Cook’s class came in our class! They came in our class because the weather outside was really bad. We went to math which is an Excel Math worksheet. It was a bit hard for me. Miss Hodges said, “In ten minutes I will help you.” When we where done with math, we went to the restroom. When we came back, it was time for reading time! I like reading time because I get to read my favorite book. Once reading time was done, it was time for lunch and recess. When we came back from recess, it was time for Poetry. In Poetry, you can break some grammar rules. Poetry is a type art in word form and can be creative in many ways! Finally it was time for Computer Lab. Well looks like I’m out of time. See you next report!

Roving Reporter        5-5-09

In morning work we worked on sentences and math.

In math we corrected our homework; we worked on square inches and volume.

Once we finished math we went right on to reading. I read a novel called High Tide in Hawaii and it is about two kids finding an adventure to find treasure.

When that was over we did writing about poetry. Then we what’d till the bell rang for everybody was ready to go home.

Photos of Starbase 2009

Here are some photos from our Starbase field trips this year.  Thank you, Vector, Sunshine, Queen Bee, and Tohee for all your wonderful teaching!

Pictures include:

1. Character building activities: walking on the skis  (team work) and working a hula hoop around the circle.  They really enjoyed those activities!  They learned that we need to depend upon one another to get the job done.

2. Graduation with certificates presented by a Master Chief of the Army!  (Unfortunately some of the pics are  not face shots; they just moved too quickly!  We didn't have time to "slow it down".  Sorry!)

Field Trip to Smitha!

Fieldtrip Our annual field trip to Smitha Middle School will be Tuesday, March 31st.  Our 5th graders will be getting information about what to expect at their new school and will also be getting a quick tour of the building.  It's an exciting time for the students!  Please make sure that permission slip has been filled out and returned by Monday.  The blue forms also need to be filled out and returned; those are important papers that Smitha needs in order to begin the registration process for the hundreds of incoming 5th graders!  Also be sure to wear comfortable clothing and shoes, as we will be walking a bit throughout the building.  We will be back by lunchtime, so there will be no need to send sack lunches.  Let's have fun!

Roving Report 3/16/09 - Jissell

Roving Reporter - 3/16/09

Jissell O.

It was a windy day outside and  almost everyone was cold. When I went to school I thought this is going to be a good day today.I went to breakfast because I was really hungry but let's skip that part because is not really important.Well I went to the classroom and fond out that I  was Roving Reporter and I needed to take a lot of notes I packed all the things I neeed for school.I wrote in my agenda what I need to remember for homework.Well when I was done with all of that I stared the real work. When I got to my desk I stared writting what I did.We had to do a paper of understanding "percent".For Example:About half the student bring their own lunches to school,"said the cafeteria work we had to choose @ 48  B 85 percent% and the correct anwer is @ 48.Miss Hodges said, "to the kids that needed to finished a DRA test".IT was time to correct our homework and Morning work from yesterday. We stared to correct a prepositinoal page from last week.Miss Hodges was hurring up because she wanted to get to "MATH".  When we were done with that,we stared doing MATH.We haded to get our math note bookes out.We were learning about RELATE DECIMALS and PERCENT.Miss Hodges said," if we write all the anwer they will stay in our head".We haded to know were the decimals go.Now we did reading, kids in our class were still taking they're DRA test.Kids in our class went to the library. After reading,we went to lunch.Once we finish lunch, we didn't went outside because it was raining. We went to class and did Figurative Language. We we're doing personification that we were trying to see "What is a simile and a Metaphor." An example for Metaphor is: My mum is a general and she is very talented. You would underlined My mum is a general. We saw a picture in the Permithium Board that they a man sending in the rain kiss his cheek but it really drops on his cheeks. When that was over, we did science. We started to share things we wrote in our homework and we had to copy something that is vocabulary preview. Kids were taking turns reading and Miss. Hodges was calling them as groups.Everything was done for science. Some people went to tutoring and some went to computer room for special. After that, we went to back to the classroom and packed up everything. We were for annoucements and then dismisal. That's how my day went.

Goodbye, 3rd Quarter; Hello, 4th!

Can you believe it is already the fourth and final quarter of our 5th grade year?  It's hard for me to believe that my dear 5th graders are almost 6th graders!  The students have been working so hard, but it's not over yet!  There are TWENTY school days until the CRCT.  That's four weeks!  Wow!

Cowboyht      The Hodges Speedway Racers have finished the Westward Expansion in Social Studies Yee haw!  Ask them what they learned about the American Cowboys, soddies, Exoduster, sodbusters, homesteading, how the railroad and telegraph connected the East to the West, and more.  Lots of learning going on the classroom!  Our next course of study will be on Immigration and the Changing Nation in the early 1900's.

Tapemsr2We also finished a Math unit on Measurement - Capacity, Volume and Area.  The students learned how to measure and convert using customary and metric measurements.  Way to go, Racers!  Our next lap around the course will be all about modeling the multiplication and division of decimals.  After that, it's all about circles, my friend!  Have you ever heard about radius, diameter, and circumference?  How about Pi?

Dancebk  In Reading, we are continuing our studies on Literary elements and practicing EVERY day to become a better reader.  Remember, just like anything else that we want to improve, we must PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!  (Ask your child if he or she met his or her AR goal of 20 points this quarter.)  Being the final quarter, I will be asking your child to challenge him- or herself even more, perhaps raising the reading level.  That's a good thing indeed.  :)

    Brainvu

We are finishing up an exciting Science unit on Inherited and Learned Traits.  Our culminating activity is making alien babies from an alien mom and dad of their choice.  Using a flip of a penny to determine inherited traits, the students will draw their little alien babies according to their parents' traits.  (For example, a flip of the coin determines if the baby's skin will be the mom's or dad's color - green, blue, purple, or red.)  You'll definitely want to come see our Alien Baby display in our hall next week!

Funpenci

Last but not least, we will continue practicing our writing skills - creative and descriptive writing using our figurative language we've learned about, poetry, imaginative and personal narratives, and of course we will be revisiting persuasive and informational writing, as well.  The students will also be responding to literature in their journals.

Don't forget to ask your child each and every day what he or she has learned in class.  It's amazing what you might find out!

Tissues Needed!

Tissuebox4c Please note that it is almost "allergy season".  That means that students will be sniffling and sneezing and blowing their noses a lot more often!  With that said, I must ask for some tissue donations.  We are just about on our last box, and it's not even the end of March yet!  Some students have not yet brought in their supply of tissues from the beginning-of-the-year supply list, so this would be a GREAT time to do that!  Also, if your child is one of the sniffling, sneezing students, please be mindful of that and perhaps send in an extra box or two to compensate!  Thank you to those who choose to donate to the cause!  (It's a great cause, right?)  :)

Roving Report 3/12/09 - Ruth

Roving Reporter

#16 Ruth P     3/12/09

Hello! When I went to my class room this Thursday morning I noticed a white sheet of paper that was titled Roving Reporter Notes on my desk. It said that I was roving reporter for today.

I unpacked, had sharpened at least two pencils, and wrote my homework in my agenda and set it on the back table for Miss Hodges to check.

Next, I started morning work. I had to write fractions as decimals and percents for example 34/100 as 0.34 and 34%.

Then, we went to music. We went to practice playing our recorders. We play a song called Hot Cross Buns. After our teachers came, we played the song for them.

Afterwards, we went back to our classroom and started math. We checked our math homework. We had to write fractions as decimals and percents. Next we talked about line graphs, bar graphs, and circle graphs and when to use them. Next, we talked about percents and I learned that percent meant out of a hundred.

Following, was figurative language. We reviewed similes, metaphors, and personification. A simile is a word that compares something with another using the words as or like. A metaphor just compares things. Personification is when you give human qualities to a non living object. Then we learned about Alliteration. I learned that the definition is the repetition of beginning sounds.

Finally, we did reading. I am reading a book called The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. It is about a girl that has two brothers and one sister and she discovers a magical wardrobe in the house of an old professor. After we read, we went to lunch and recess.

When we came back Miss Hodges read us a book called Peter and the Star catchers. It’s about a boy named Peter and a girl named Molly and they try to hide a chest that has magic in it from a bad man named Black stash.

When that was over, we did science. We did a chart to know who in our class could roll their tongues, had straight hair, and who had brown eyes. We talked about inherited traits which are traits that you get from your parents, for example hair color, eye color, and skin color. We also talked about instincts which is a behavior an organism inherits.

When we finished, we went to art. Our teacher said,’’ You all need to finish drawing your house for your art project next week!’’ When I finished my house, she told me to cut it out and draw anything else that I wanted to.

At 2:02 we went back to our classroom and stayed there until dismissal. I sure learned a lot today!
