April 2009 Mrs. Hoffman's Class News

Dear Parents,                                                                             April 2009

   Our class will be busy in Reading learning 50 more words off the 200 word list.  In Writing, we will be doing an author study and writing an opinion about a story we have read.   In Math, we will learn about measurement( length, weight, and capacity) plus learn to add and subtract 2-digit numbers.  In Science, we will study how to compare and contrast animals.  In Social Studies, we will be learning about American folktales and personal finance.  We are excited about our Field Trip on April 1st to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens!  Come and join us for Cosmic Bowling on April 2nd.  Remember, Spring Break is April 4-12.  We will come back refreshed and be ready to review for the CRCT which is the week of April 20th.

Mrs. Hoffman's Newsletter March 2009

Dear Parents,                                                                      March 2009

    The First Grade classes are reviewing Language Arts, Reading, and Math for the CRCT in April.  We are reading for meaning and learning math facts to 18.  For the 4th nine weeks, students will learn about measurement, use numbers to 100, and 2-digit addition and subtraction in Math.  In Writing, we will be doing an author study.  In Reading, we will review long and short vowel sounds, learn fact from fiction, learn cause and effect, use dictionary and glossary skills, and recognize plot, setting, and characters within texts.  In Science, we will learn to compare and describe animals.  In Social Studies, we will learn about American Folktales and Personal Finance.  Maybe you can come and share a career with us on Career Day--March 6th!  Thanks for all your support.

Mrs. Hoffman's Class February 2009

    Dear Parents,                                                                                   February 2009

       Our class is busy practicing for the CRCT in April.  We are practicing math, language arts, and reading.  We are excited about our Field Trip to the Center for Puppetry Arts on Feb. 26th!  Six Flags reading logs are due on Feb. 25th.  They must be signed by a parent.  We enjoyed the Valentine visit from the 5th graders from Mt. Bethel Elementary School and all the fun activities they had for us, plus they gave each of our students a free book to keep.  Keep reading with your child for 20 minutes each day and review addition and subtraction facts to 18.  Thanks for all your support.

Mrs. Hoffrman's Class January 2009

Dear Parents,                                                                          January 2009

    I hope everyone had a good time over the Winter Holidays!  We are ready to get back into the routine of school and learning.  In Language Arts, your child should learn 50 more words from the 200 word list.  In Math, we will be learning about facts to 18, fractions, and counting money.  In Science, students will learn about light and shadows, plants, and animals.  In Social Studies, students will learn about Harriet Tubman, Theodore Roosevelt, and George Washington Carver.  In Health, we will learn about all kinds of safety.  Please be sure to attend Parent Conferences the week of January 25th. Report cards will be passed out then.

Mrs. Hoffman's December 2008 Newsletter

    Dear Parents,                                                             December 2008

       Our class will be busy preparing for Benchmark tests in all subjects during December.  Please come to the PTA meeting and Holiday program on December 2nd at 6:30.  Breakfast with Santa happens on December 13th from 10-12.  Skate Night at Sparkles is on December 18th. Our class Winter Holiday party will be on December 19th--- Please send a note if you wish to help with the party.  Winter Break is December 22nd --January 5th.  Please remember to have your child read to you over the holidays as often as possible.  Thanks for all your help and support.

Mrs. Hoffman's News for November 2008

    Dear Parents,                                                                      November 2008

       In Writing, students are learning to write stories that have characters, setting, and sequence(beginning, middle, ending).  I will be testing your child each Friday on the 200 word list----remember, students are to learn 50 more words each nine weeks.  In Math, students are learning to count tens and ones, order numbers to 100, learn geometric shapes, compare numbers by size, learn math facts to 12, and count money to one dollar.  In Social Studies, we are learning about Lewis and Clark.   In Science, we are learning about magnets and sound.  Remember to let your child read to you for 20 minutes each night.  Homework is listed on the homework calendar.  Please join us for the VIP DAY at Milford on November 18th for 1st, 2nd, or 4th grade for lunch.  VIP DAY will be on November 19th for K, 3rd, and 5th grades.  We all look forward to seeing you then.

Mrs. Hoffman's Class News for October 2008

Dear Parents,                                                                             October 2008

    Our class will be learning about Narrative writing in Language Arts.  Students will learn how to represent and compare numbers to 100, learn facts to 12 , and learn about tables and graphs in Math.  In Science, students will learn about magnets and sound.  In Social Studies, students will learn about Lewis and Clark and Sacagawea. In Reading, students will learn more of the first grade vocabulary while they are in guided reading groups.  Our school uses Sitton Spelling to teach spelling.  Nutrition and Personal Health will be taught also.  You can see that we are very busy each day learning all the standards for First Grade.  Thanks for all your help and support at home with your child. Dear Parents,                                                                                            September 2008

     Our class is working hard to learn 50 words off the 200 word list by the end of this nine weeks in Reading. Our class is working on addition and subtraction in Math.  We are working to learn the 7 continents and the 4 oceans in Social Studies plus landforms and learning about the life of Benjamin Franklin.  In Writing, we are learning to write 3-4 sentences on one topic.  In Science, we are learning about  types of weather, the seasons, and water.  We have already started to learn Spelling words---we use the Sitton Spelling program.  You can see that we are working hard each and every day.

    Thank you parents, for signing your child's Homework folder, Reading folder, and Agenda each day. The end of the nine weeks will be on October 10th.             Sincerely,

Dear Parents,                                                                                     August 2008

   Welcome to a new school year!  Our class will be learning to read words, read stories, write sentences and write stories. In Math, we will be learning about numbers to 30, number lines, addition, calendar, and how to count money. All of these activities will be exciting for us!  Please support your school and your child by joining the PTA.  Be sure to read through your child's Agenda and check his/her Homework folder each day.  I am looking forward to a wonderful year of teaching your child. Dear Parents,

    I hope all of you and your children are having a great Spring Break!  Cosmic Bowling is coming soon, on April 17 from 5:30 to 7:00.  Please join us for an evening of fun.  We are busy preparing for the CRCT which runs from April 23- May 1.  We have one week of school after Spring Break to finish preparing students for this important test. The first grades will have our Field Trip to Sweetwater Creek State Park on May 7th--- we will have fun learning about plants and animals in the park.
